Useful Information

Provisional Licence
Before you can start driving lessons, you need to apply for a provisional licence. You can apply online at the DVSA (click hereor at your local Post Office.

If you want to start driving lessons on your 17th birthday, you can apply for a provisional licence when you are 15 years and 9 months old (the licence will be valid on the day you turn 17)

At your first lesson, you will need to present your provisional driving licence and you must be able to read a car number plate from 20 metres away (with glasses / contact lenses, if needed)

Theory Test

Before you can take your Practical Driving Test, you need to pass the Theory Test.

The test is in two parts.

1. 50 multiple choice questions to answer in 57 minutes; you need to answer a minimum of 43 correctly.

2. The Hazard Perception Test - you will watch 14 video clips. The clips will show every day road scenarios which will contain at least one developing hazard and one of the clips will feature 2 developing hazards. The more developing hazards you spot as they start to happen, the more points you will get. To pass, you need a minimum score of 44 out of 75 points.

To pass your theory test and gain your certificate, you need to pass parts 1 & 2.

Practical Test

According to the DVSA, the majority of people will have around 45 hours of professional driving tuition & 20 hours of private practice before they are ready to pass their practical driving test. Everyone learns at a different rate so this is just an indication of how many hours you may need.

To take your practical driving test, you will need:

  • your UK provisional driving licence

  • a car - most people will use their Driving Instructor's car or you can use your own car as long as it meets the DVSA rules.

We will work together and I will advise you when I feel you are ready to take your test.
